Your wallet is designed to be a lifelong companion. To ensure it ages beautifully:
Daily Use: The natural oils from your hands are the best conditioner. Regular handling will keep the leather supple and help buff out light surface scratches.
Moisture: If your wallet gets wet, wipe it immediately with a soft, dry cloth and allow it to air dry naturally away from direct heat.
Cleaning: Use a dry cloth to remove any surface dust, and then wipe down the exterior using a cleaner that is specially formulated for leather. Apply the cleaner with a soft cloth in a circular motion; then remove with a slightly damp cloth to avoid clogging the pores of the leather.
Conditioning: Every 6–12 months, gently apply a light coat of a high-quality leather balm to maintain the leather’s oils. (Conditioning can slightly change the color of the leather, so be sure you’re happy with the effect on a test spot first.)
The Patina: Embrace the transition. Minor scuffs are part of the vegetable-tan experience and will eventually blend into the deep, burnished glow of the leather.
1. Is every piece handcrafted?
Yes, at Valence Leather Co., every wallet is a labor of intention. From the initial selection of premium hides to the precision of the hand-cut panels, each step is performed by hand. We utilize traditional saddle-stitching for unparalleled durability, finishing every piece with a hand-burnished edge. Every detail is executed with the future owner in mind, ensuring a product that is not just made, but engineered to endure.
2. What defines the "Quiet Luxury" quality of your materials?
At Valence Leather Co., quiet luxury is defined by an uncompromising commitment to materials that speak for themselves without the need for loud logos. We exclusively source our primary hides—like the world-renowned Buttero—from Conceria Walpier in Tuscany, Italy. This leather is produced using a traditional vegetable-tanning process, an artisanal method using natural plant tannins that takes months to complete. The result is a leather with a dense, firm handle and a rich aroma that mass-produced, chemically-tanned leathers simply cannot replicate.
For our most exclusive offerings, we elevate the experience further with heritage materials like Marbled Rocado Shell Cordovan and Italian Dollaro. Shell Cordovan is widely considered the finest leather in the world, prized for its glass-like finish and incredible durability, while Dollaro provides a sophisticated, scratch-resistant pebble grain. By choosing these world-class materials, we ensure that your wallet doesn’t just look premium on day one—it is engineered to evolve, developing a deep, lustrous patina that records your unique journey over a lifetime of use.
3: My wallet has developed a light scratch. Is this normal?
Absolutely. Because we use full-grain, vegetable-tanned leathers like Italian Buttero, the surface is natural and "open." Unlike "genuine" leathers coated in heavy plastic pigments, our leather is designed to record your journey. Light surface scratches are expected and are a hallmark of authentic, high-quality hides.
As you carry your wallet, it undergoes a transformation. The leather will gradually darken and develop a lustrous, protective sheen known as a patina. This natural "glaze" actually makes the leather more resistant to light marks over time. What starts as a fresh scratch today will eventually become a part of the deep, multi-toned finish that defines a well-loved leather heirloom.
3. How do I remove or hide scratches?
The beauty of premium Italian leather is its high oil content. For light scuffs, simply use the warmth of your thumb to firmly massage the area in a circular motion; the natural oils will often move to fill in the mark. For deeper scratches, a small amount of high-quality leather balm will help the mark blend into the leather’s developing patina. Over time, these marks smooth out and contribute to the rich, burnished character unique to your wallet.
